Writing with Katie and Kids are Funny

Today was the Oregon Reading Association's Winter Institute.  Katie Wood Ray was the featured speaker and she is so fabulous.  I have been to one of her presentations before, but every time, it is the writing refreshment I need.  What she is able to pull out of a students writer is so inspiring.  If you have not read About the Authors, you are missing an incredible teaching book.  It should be in everyone's teacher library.  While at the conference I won a door prize (apparently I am having a winning week....maybe need a lottery ticket.)  So I know have Katie's newest book In Pictures and in Words and am looking forward to digging into a new text.

While I was gone my students did some predicting of where I was....so funny!
"I think Miss Foote was spending the night at the zoo."  The rest of the page goes on to list all the animals I would feed.
"Miss Foote is at New York and Mexico and Disneyland and a math meeting."
"I think Miss Foote went to the pet store, the dentist, and the doctory."  (Thank goodness that is NOT how I spent the day!)
"I think Miss Foote is playing golf on her Wii."
"I think Miss Foote went to a Dodger game."  (If only it were baseball season, and I could easily hop over to LA....)
"I think Miss Foote is getting us presents, like ice cream."
"I think Miss Foote is at a meeting, because she is always at meetings."
"I think Miss Foote is at a meeting, sitting at a table.  Just sitting and sitting and talking and talking at a big round table."

"She is at an amazing teacher party."
Mrs. Sadar, Mrs. Koch, Miss Foote, and Miss Cusick
"I think Miss Foote is at the beach catching crabs.  After that she will catch fish.  Then she will have a nice dinner and think about us."
"I think Miss Foote is having fun at home reading books, drinking coffee, and writing us letters.  Or she is at the beach with her brother."
sorry it's sideways.....it has a mind of its own
Too funny!  Happy Friday,
Miss Foote

  1. Those are very cute. I'm rarely gone, but what a great idea if I am. I've read Katie Wood Ray, but I'm not familiar with the books you mentioned. I bet that conference was sweet!

    1. Maybe we will need to have an Oregon Meetup. I am so jealous of all the blogging people meeting in real life.

  6. I was excited to read about Katie Wood Ray - I absolutely loved About the Authors! I had the privilege of having dinner with her (and about 10 other people!) several years ago at a Reading Recovery Conference in NJ. She was lovely and interesting and all of the things you hope that someone you admire really will be like when you get to meet them!
It's obvious from your kids' clever thinking that you have them on the authors' path!
